The Brigade of Midshipmen completed the second part of its fall semester zone inspection, the Class Alpha Room Inspection, Dec. 2 and 3. In addition to their numerous other duties, Midshipmen are responsible for maintaining the material condition of their company’s spaces within Bancroft Hall and the zone inspection assesses their ability to do that.
The zone inspection, conducted each semester, is made up of two parts, the material condition inspection and the Alpha inspection. The material condition inspection focuses on things such as door locks, window screens, missing ceiling tiles and electrical outlets – things that affect safety and the functionality of equipment.
‘‘Anything that might possibly have to be fixed goes into the material condition inspection,” said Midn. 1⁄C Jason Mazzoni, the Brigade 1st Lieutenant. ‘‘The most common discrepancies are damaged ceiling tiles, a cabinet not working properly, needing a new shower curtain – just the little things that get broken over time.”
As Brigade 1st Lieutenant, Mazzoni is tasked with scheduling the inspections. He also meets with the battalion and company 1st lieutenants every week to make sure that work orders are being submitted and closed out once repairs are complete.
Midshipmen must submit work orders throughout the semester whenever something needs repair or replacement. If an issue is discovered during the inspection that does not already have a work order associated with it, it counts as a discrepancy.
‘‘It’s for us to have an idea of what work orders have to be put in, if any, and what work orders have been done,” said Mazzoni.
The Alpha inspection focuses more on cleanliness and assesses individual companies’ ability to maintain its rooms and other assigned areas of responsibility. The inspection is thorough, with inspectors using a white glove to check for dust and grime and a black sock to check for soap scum in the shower areas.
First class Midshipmen from throughout the Brigade are selected for the inspection team to inspect spaces outside their own battalion.
For both inspections, each item on the grading sheet is marked satisfactory or unsatisfactory and even one unsatisfactory on the form results in an overall unsatisfactory grade for that space. In the case of the Alpha inspection, each satisfactory mark is added up for points toward the Color Company Competition at the end of the year.
