On Veterans Day Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, Adjutant Gen. James Adkins of the Maryland National Guard, and the Maryland State Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Nancy Grasmick, gave opening remarks to the Military Child Education Coalition's (MCEC)Guard and Reserve Institute in Timonium, Md.
The MCEC Supporting Children of the National Guard and Reserves Institute focuses on information needed to raise community awareness about the issues faced by children when a parent is deployed. Through a combination of direct instruction, group work and interactive activities, participants develop strategies and the framework of an Action Plan to support these children of the “suddenly military.“
Naval Support Activity South Potomac will be hosting similar trainings in the near future at Naval Support Facilities Dahlgren and Indian Head for installation personnel and local community members.
The first one held by NSASP will be the MCEC Transition Counselor Institute (TCI) Phase I--which is the first in a series of three interactive professional development institutes focusing on the military-connected child's experience with transitions. TCI Phase I strives to create an environment for education, installation, and community professionals to have access to professional networks, technologies, resources, and support systems to help them stay abreast of the dynamic and diverse K-12 school experience that impacts the transitioning student. Military lifestyle and culture, school transition perspectives, identifying local transition challenges, and supporting children through trauma and loss are some of the modules addressed.
