The Naval Academy staff held a multimedia sale on the top floor of Dahlgren Hall Nov. 2-6. Now in its second year, the goal of the sale was to raise funds for the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC).

According to their Web site, www.opm.gov⁄cfc, the CFC is the world's largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign. More than 300 CFC campaigns exist throughout the country and internationally to help to raise millions of dollars each year. Pledges made by federal civilian, postal and military donors during the campaign season, Sept. 1 to Dec. 15, support eligible non-profit organ-izations that provide health and human service benefits throughout the world.

Lt. Christopher Roettgen, Naval Academy CFC special events coordinator, said that the Naval Academy has been working with the CFC since its infancy during the Kennedy administration.

‘‘The Naval Academy represents the Navy and Marine Corps to the public, so we like to give back to the public for all the support they give us,” said Roettgen.

Among the items being sold at the multi-media drive were books, DVDs, VHS tapes and computer software. Charging $2 per book, and $4 for all other materials, the multimedia drive raised $1,738 in just five days, with proceeds from the drive benefiting the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) charity.

Founded in 1966, RIF supports literacy in underserved communities throughout the U.S. and its territories with the help of community volunteers, providing 4.5 million children with 16 million new, free books and literary resources each year.

‘‘I really enjoyed being a part of the drive,” said Roettgen. ‘‘It’s a nice way to contribute to the CFC other than just pledging.”

Roettgen expressed his appreciation to all who participated in and contributed to the success of the multimedia drive, adding that there are plenty of volunteer opportunities in the CFC for staff, faculty and Midshipmen alike.
