King George Relay For Life Plans Kickoff Event
King George Relay For Life will kick off with a bang on Friday, Nov. 13 from 6 – 8 p.m. on the YMCA parking lot. The event will feature a bonfire, DJ, games for the kids, and teams can register for this year’s Relay For Life event (to be held May 22, 2010). There will also be a chili cookoff, so work on your recipe and bring your best pot of chili! Prizes will be awarded! To register for the chili cookoff, contact Jeron Hayes at (540) 846-3382. Stafford Regional Choral Society Recruiting Singers for December Concert
It's not too late to join the Stafford Regional Choral Society for the December concert featuring Handel's Messiah. The group is accepting singers for all vocal parts for the concert to be held Dec. 20 at 3 pm. Rehearsals are on Sundays, and continue through Dec. 13 from 6-8 p.m. at Colonial Forge High School. Singers from high school through adult are welcome. Directed by Barbara Perry, the Dec. 20 concert program will feature selections from Handel's Messiah, with orchestra, and other holiday favorites. Smoot Library Offers English as a Second Language Classes
English as a Second Language (ESOL) classes are being offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 – 11 a.m. at Smoot Memorial Library, 9533 Kings Highway, King George (near courthouse on Rt. 3). There is a $20 registration fee.

Applications Being Accepted for Vacancies on Charles County Boards and Committees
The Charles County Commissioners are seeking county residents to fill vacancies on the following boards and committees: the Adult Public Guardianship Review Board, Area Council on Aging, Blue Ribbon Commission on Diversity and Inter-Group Relations, Board of Appeals, Board of Fire and Rescue, Board of License Commissioners (Liquor Board), Board of Social Services, Commission for Women, Ethics Commission, Gaming Permit Review Board, Homeowners’ Association Dispute Review Board, Nuisance Abatement Board, Professional Services Selection Committee and the Sheriff Disability Review Board.

Commissioners Join Efforts to Stamp Out Hunger in Charles County
The Charles County Commissioners and County staff members will gather on Saturday, Nov. 14, at four local grocery stores to collect food items for the Southern Maryland Food Bank. Participating in the effort and providing collection locations are the Safeway stores at Waldorf Market Place (3501 Waldorf Market) and in Bryans Road (3129 Marshall Corner Road), as well as the Giant Food Stores in Rosewick Shopping Center (200 Rosewick Road) and Charles Plaza (3297 Crain Highway).
Commissioners and staff members of County Government will be on hand at all locations to accept donations. Cash donations will also be accepted—make checks payable to The Southern Maryland Food Bank. Donations will be accepted from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Indian Head Rail Trail Seeks Attendant Volunteers
The Charles County Department of Public Facilities, Parks & Recreation Division is seeking volunteers to serve as trail attendants on the Indian Head Rail Trail. Trail attendants will monitor trail activities, conduct safety patrols, assist trail patrons, and help with litter control. Volunteers work a flexible schedule (sign up for as few as two days per month) and must be 18 years of age or older. Walk For Homelessness
The 7th Annual Charles County Walk to Eliminate Homelessness will be held Nov. 21 at 9 a.m. at La Plata Town Hall. This yearly 3-mile challenge helps provide warm shelter to homeless Charles County residents from Nov. 1 – April 1. For more information, contact (301) 609-9900.
