H1N1 Vaccine and Seasonal Flu Prevention

NHC Annapolis now has the H1N1 Vaccine for non-active duty Tricare beneficiaries. Because the pediatric population is at greatest risk, the health clinic is currently vaccinating only patients who are between ages 2 and 24 years of age, live with or care for children younger than 6 months old or are health care and emergency services personnel.

For information on how to obtain a seasonal (not H1N1) flu vaccination, visit the NHC Annapolis Web site at www.med.navy.mil⁄ sites⁄annapolis⁄Pages⁄ default. aspx. The CDC recommends a yearly seasonal flu vaccine, which protects against the three seasonal viruses that research suggests are most common.Vaccination is especially important for people at high risk for serious flu complications, including young children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, or heart and lung disease and people over 64 years old. Healthy people are more resistant to contagious diseases, but it is important to get adequate sleep, eat nutritious food and keep physically active. Medical experts encourage everyone to frequently wash their hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand cleaner. Exposure to people with coughs and fevers should be limited. Common facemasks may reduce the spread of cough and sneeze droplets from people who have the flu.
