4 events mark Veterans Day

Four events will mark Veterans Day next week, starting with a Memorial Service Sunday, 2 p.m. at the ‘‘On Watch” statue in Solomons. The statue commemorates the U.S. Naval Amphibious Training Base located there during World War Two. To reach the ceremony, follow Dowell Road to its end at the marina.

On Tuesday will be the USS Tulip Memorial Service at 9 a.m. It honors the eight unknowns buried there when their gunboat exploded off Piney Point during the Civil War. To reach the memorial, turn right onto Grayson Road, just before the Webster Field main gate. When Grayson Road makes a 90-degree right turn, make a 90-degree left onto gravel-topped Cross Manor Road and follow it to the end.

Wednesday is Veterans Day, and it will be marked with the annual parade in Leonardtown, starting at 10 a.m. on Washington Street. It is one of the largest Veterans Day Parades in Maryland.

Immediately following the parade is the Veterans Memorial Ceremony, which includes guest speakers Pax River Commanding Officer Capt. Andy Macyko, Sen. Benjamin Cardin, and Congressman Steny Hoyer.

Local high school bands will play the Armed Forces Salute and Taps during the laying of wreaths at the memorial in Town Square.

That afternoon will be the 24th Annual Veterans Day Observance Program at the Veterans Memorial in Helen, located at Routes 5 and 238. It will start at 2 p.m.
