The Slip Inn Bar & Grill once again achieved its mission to be a fun, entertaining place on base.
A costume party and contest was held there the evening of Oct. 30. The party started at 5 p.m., but the costume contest began later. Olga Leyh, the bar manager, said that she wanted to ‘‘wait a little while longer” so that those still out trick-or-treating with their children could arrive. She said that the extra time before the contest began ‘‘gave everyone a chance to get here and compete.“
Early arrivals danced to the music pumped out by the live disc jockey. When more folks joined the party, Leyh decided that the contest could begin. Prizes, such as an iPod shuffle, a boombox and a digital camera, were awarded to those with the funniest, scariest, and most original Halloween costumes, as well as a ‘‘Just Because” category.
Kitchen Manager Terri Ray made sure there was a steady flow of food to keep up with the customer orders, while Leyh circulated among the patrons delivering drinks. Keeping in the ‘‘spooky” spirit, she was dressed as a catwoman, and Robert McCullough contributed to the cheery ambiance by showing up in a ‘‘vacationing gorilla” guise.
On Oct. 28, 11th Services started its spooky shenanigans with a ‘‘haunted house happening” at the Slip Inn parking lot.
Visitors to the fright fest were assailed by sinister sounds and howls, with a haunted laboratory and appropriately darkened corners.
It was manned by base volunteers and Service employees dressed as scary skeletons, crazed clowns, and bloodthirsty pirates.
Judging from the happy grins, everyone had a good time as well as a good scare that night.
