AFSA collects items for Wounded Warriors
by Airman 1st Class Katherine Windish
As winter season approaches, the National Capital Region’s Air Force Sergeants’ Association Chapter 300 is collecting items to donate to the Wounded Warriors at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, helping to comfort them during the holidays.
Items are needed for men and women in all sizes and must be new and unused.
Smaller items normally with a retail value of less than $30 are greatly appreciated, including:
Candy and snacks (store-bought and individually wrapped)
T-shirts
Athletic shorts
Underwear, boxers and bras
Athletic pants (snaps on both sides are needed for amputee patients)
Bathing suits and swim trunks (one piece for women)
Full-size toiletry items (except shampoo and conditioner)
Slippers and flip-flops
Sweatshirts and sweatpants
Warm jackets
Towels
Wallets
Model kits
DVDs
Nondisposable razors and razor blades
Athletic sneakers
Backpacks (preferably solid black for military requirements)
Games and activities, including electronic poker, solitaire and blackjack.
Other items on the wish list usually are sold at a greater retail value but can benefit several Soldiers at once. Nintendo DS and Brain Age games help with cognitive functioning and concentration for Wounded Warriors recovering from head injuries. Wii game consoles and the Wii Fit game are used for physical and occupational therapy exercises to help with balance and coordination. MP3 players help with stress reduction, relaxation and pain management.
International calling cards; gas cards from large national chains; Visa, American Express, retail, grocery store, restaurant and iTunes gift cards; and movie, music and sports event tickets can be donated at any value.
Collection boxes are set up in building 46 on Bolling, floor 13 of 1500 Wilson Blvd. in Rosslyn, and room 4B888 in the Pentagon. Donations will be accepted until Nov. 20 by Master Sgt. Robert Greenberg and Staff Sgts. Earnest Frye and Crystal Jimson.
For information, contact Sergeant Jimson at crystal.jimson@afncr.af.mil of 703-697-1500.
