The Marine Corps Embassy Security Group’s recent union with Marine Corps Air Facility may have a lot to do with their 34-6 win over Marine Corps University on Oct. 22 in a flag football game at Freeney Field.
With a shortage in players, MCAF came close to forfeiting the rest of the season’s games. Instead, they joined forces with MCESG, and the two teams became one, known as Airfield Security.
The new fusion has taken some getting used to for the players, but on the field, teamwork played a large role in their victory.
‘‘Since MCESG [joined], we are 6-1,” said Tron Blossom, Airfield Security’s quarterback. ‘‘The team we have has a lot of talent.”
Blossom assisted most of the team’s touchdowns with passes the defense couldn’t anticipate.
‘‘We went to a new offense which gave [MCU] a choice,” said Blossom. ‘‘Rush and leave the middle open for me to pass, or have one guy come up and allow me to run past.”
‘‘Our defense played zone the whole game,” said Jonathan Mbwiri of MCU. ‘‘Which allowed the other team to gain yards.”
Even on offense, MCU barely crept past the 50-yard line without a turnover.
‘‘The reason we lost is because of individuality,” said Mbwiri. ‘‘Everyone was doing their own stuff instead of playing like a team. There is no ‘I’ in team.”
Teamwork is a key element in team sports, but getting good teamwork takes time and practice.
‘‘As they say, practice makes perfect,” said Mbwiri. ‘‘We were unable to show that perfection on the field.”
