As Base Realignment and Closure construction projects continue to progress here at the National Naval Medical Center Bethesda, safety, a top priority of NNMC leaders, is the topic of discussion at the weekly Town Hall meeting. Patients, visitors and employees were reminded that along with patient care, safety of all personnel aboard the campus is a primary concern.
‘‘We are doing everything we can to make sure the campus remains a safe environment for our patients and all personnel working or visiting here,” said Jeff Miller, Traffic Program Manager.
Using a number of examples to emphasize the importance of following safety rules, obeying speed limits, parking regulations and just being safe, he emphasized the fact that there are many pedestrians, bicyclists, and school children on campus.
‘‘For instance, our neighbor to the north, Stone Ridge School, we want to reiterate the fact they are back in school and many of the children walk along the front of our facility to get to their various destinations. We want to remind you to be more watchful of the pedestrian walks, and any bicyclists,” he told the audience. ‘‘We all need to be more safety-minded and cautious now that they are back in school.”
Miller also stressed taking extra care to be mindful of the surroundings, pay attention to and obey signage when driving on campus. Using the example of parking in BRAC fire zones, he said the command, nor the fire department, cannot be held responsible if the safety of someone’s car is jeopardized and damage occurs to the vehicle because that person is parked illegally in a fire zone. He also pointed out that all personnel within the construction zone must wear the proper protective gear, such as reflective vests, hard hats, steel toed shoes, and so on.
Miller then discussed previously mentioned topics such as the availability of parking and construction updates, such as last week’s hot topic: G-Lot. He ended the meeting after taking questions from the audience.
