Officials tackle mold issues in Mologne House

Walter Reed officials are using industrial strength services to ‘‘clean and rehabilitate” rooms in the Mologne House Hotel found to have possible mold issues.

Housekeeping staff identified the possible mold Aug. 27 while doing routine cleaning. Walter Reed’s Environmental Health Services and Industrial Hygiene Services were called in to investigate the possible mold.

A number of rooms have been identified with possible mold. Occupants of those rooms were moved to new lodging.

Industrial strength dehumidifiers are being used to dry the affected rooms, which will then be throughly cleaned and serviced to eliminate the mold.

Officials said a ‘‘systematic room-by-room inspection” of all Walter Reed lodging facilities is being conducted ‘‘to ensure there are not other mold issues and to curtail any causes of mold or mildew growth.” They expect the inspections of all post lodging, which serves as the primary residence for wounded warriors and their families, to be completed by this weekend.

It is believed the mold was caused by thermostats set too low, combined with outside temperatures and humidity from open room windows causing condensation and mold growth on carpeting and vent covers.

Mologne House residents have been instructed not to turn their thermostats below 72 degrees, and keep their windows closed to prevent moisture from gathering in the rooms, ‘‘and to foster a healthy environment.” (Stripe)
