Capt. Michael Malanoski, commanding officer for Naval Support Activity (NSA) Bethesda, right, on Wednesday registers to receive a new decal for his car as part of the command’s revamped Pass & ID system, effective Jan. 1, 2011.
To increase security and ease the flow of traffic on base, a new parking system was introduced on Monday at the Naval Support Activity Bethesda.

The distribution, or recertification, of DoD decals and installation parking decals for all staff are being issued and will ensure that employees are parked within the appropriate areas on the installation.

‘‘One of the benefits of this new system will be Security’s ability to ensure individuals who are authorized to park on the installation, or within specific areas of the installation, are in compliance with the regulations,” said Jeff Miller, transportation program manager at Naval Support Activity Bethesda.

The new system, designed by NNMC’s Information Technology department, will also allow for improved security response from base police as information will be more easily accessible for those who are registered to access the installation. It will also provide continuous checks and balances between those staff receiving Mass Transit Fringe Benefits and those receiving installations parking permits.

‘‘I am excited this new system is up and running,” said Chief Master-at-Arms Hans Semple, access control officer at NSA. ‘‘[I am] also very happy with how smoothly distribution has gone thus far.”

With few exceptions, all parking lots on campus will require a parking decal. Various parking decals will be issued to identify specific parking areas. For example, staff will receive new ‘‘B” and ‘‘F” parking decals for eligibility to park within the staff parking garage (Building 54).

The Joint Task Force command will receive a ‘‘J,” Mercy, Solace and Comfort Hall residents a ‘‘Q” and general staff parking a ‘‘G.”

In order to apply for these new parking decals, staff must visit during their designated command directorate scheduled time, bring a completed and signed application to Pass and ID in Bldg. 7, 1st floor, your Common Access Card (CAC), military, government employee or contractor ID card as proof of identity as well as your driver’s license.

To assist parking officials, all invalid and expired decals must be removed and brought to Pass and ID during your distribution period.

After the application has been processed, you will receive a new ID badge that is slightly different from the current version. If necessary, you will also receive a DoD decal and an installation decal, a month year decal and a parking decal. Valid installation decals must state Naval District Washington or NSA.

All new decals must be placed by Jan.1, 2011, when security will begin to enforce the new requirements. However, effective immediately, vehicles with a new parking sticker must park in the appropriate lot.
