Refractive surgeryavailable at Andrews
The U.S. Air Force Refractive Surgery Program exists to enhance the operational readiness of aviators and warfighters by reducing dependence on glasses and contact lenses.
Refractive surgery at the Warfighter Eye Center at Malcolm Grow Medical Center at Andrews Air Force Base has been at full-time operation since May 2009, after an extensive upgrade to the laser suite.
‘‘We provide state-of-the-art technology and treatment, performing both PRK and lasik surgery,” said Maj. Megan McChesney, 779th Medical Group ophthalmologist. ‘‘PRK and LASIK are procedures that use a laser to precisely sculpt and reshape the cornea of the eye to correct for refractive error. We treat active-duty personnel from all branches of the military, once they have their commander’s authorization to proceed with surgery.”
An informational briefing is held at 1 p.m. every Friday at the Warfighter Eye Center at MGMC, third floor of the hospital. Briefers address specifics on how to apply for surgery and the different procedures.

No sick call, call forsame-day appointment
The Bolling Clinic does not have sick-call hours. The change was implemented with the Air Force Family Health Initiative in June 2009. The Air Force-wide initiative emphasizes the availability of daily appointments for acute medical needs, eliminating the need for sick call. Airmen and family members with acute medical needs during duty hours should call the appointment line, 1-888-999-1212. After duty hours, the emergency room at Malcolm Grow Medical Center at Andrews AFB, is available 24 hours every day.
Patients seeking emergency dental services at Bolling should call 202-404-5519 to obtain the most appropriate opportunity for care available to the patient. In all cases of acute distress, patients receive same-day opportunities for evaluation and relief of their acute symptoms.

In-service recruiter offers opportunities
Members separating from active duty are encouraged to check opportunities available in the Air Force Reserves and Air National Guard through the Palace Chase and Palace Front programs.
Palace Front allows those separating to stay in the military through the reserves at the end of their military commitment, and Palace Chase allows active-duty officer and enlisted members to voluntarily transfer from active military service early. The member's remaining active-duty service commitment or term of enlistment may be waived, for approved applicants, in exchange for the member's agreement to participate in a Selected Reserve or National Guard program.
As part of their outprocessing checklist, members are required to be briefed by the installation in-service recruiter.
Master Sgt. Jeanette Masters, in-service recruiter for Bolling Air Force Base and the Pentagon, used to give Palace Chase briefings in a group setting.
“Members who came to the briefings walked away with more questions and ended up having to come back anyway for more personalized information,“ she said. “That's when I started doing individual briefings instead.“
To make an appointment for information about the Palace Front or Palace Chase programs, e-mail Jeanette.masters@afncr.af.mil, or Bolling members can call (202) 767-4105, or Pentagon members can call (703) 693-1463.
