Do you want to know one of the best kept secrets on Bolling AFB? It is about the Nathaniel M. Adams Jr. Military Lodge in Washington, D.C. This Masonic Lodge devotes a good portion of its charitable works to help the Airmen and women on base.

Senior Warden James Ellis (his title means he occupies the No. 2 spot in the lodge) is trying very hard to burst this secrecy bubble. He wants every military member on Bolling to know that this Masonic organization is ready to lend a helping hand to anyone who, through no fault of their own, suffers from misfortune and has fallen upon hard times.

Ellis said that his organization regularly assembles food baskets for military members. He added that every year, the NMA Military Lodge donates four or five turkeys to worthy Airmen on the base.

‘‘We give (the turkeys) to the Chiefs group (the base’s Chief Master Sergeants) and let them decide who gets them,” Ellis said. He also said that the lodge has worked with the Airman’s Attic.

When the organization holds fish fries, the members on Bolling AFB are welcome to attend. Ellis also said that the lodge performs good works for those who are off the base. He said that the lodge is very active in supporting elementary-school students and financing scholarships for college youths as well.

Ellis works at the Defense Intelligence Agency on Bolling AFB. He has a black belt in kempo karate, and instructs martial arts classes in the evening at the base Aerobic Center.
