Patients at the Naval Health Clinic with appointments at Bethesda Naval Hospital or Walter Reed Army Medical Center do not have to travel at their own expense inpersonal vehicles. They can use a free shuttle service Monday through Friday.

Shuttle services are available to all Department of Defense card holders, includingreservists, retirees and family members.Because the shuttle transports patients toappointments at Walter Reed and Bethesda for free, Defense Travel System vouchers are no longer authorized.

‘‘All patrons of the Naval Health Clinic can use the shuttle,” said Master Gunnery Sgt. Mark Hebert, the transportationbranch chief. ‘‘A lot of people don’t know about the service, simply due to the lackof advertisement.”

The shuttle departs from the clinic weekday mornings at 6:30. From there, ittransports patients to Bethesda and then Walter Reed. Return time is 6 p.m.

Commanders should know that Marines who use the service will be out for most of the duty day.

The service, although not well known, has been available to patrons of the Naval clinic since 2001, according to Andre McDonald, the transportation supervisor.

Transportation Branch provides the vehicles for patient transport, and will provide as many 11-passenger vans as needed.

Those wishing to use the service must first check in with the clinic for accountability by calling 703-784-1515.
