Choke point

Choked-off Catlin Avenue is soon to become a ‘‘noparking zone.” Cars parked along Catlin Avenue create narrow lanes where drivers try to avoid hitting parked cars by traveling in the middle of the road and nearly into the flow of oncoming traffic.

‘‘We want to get the word out there,” said Ed Billig, drivers training branch manager. ‘‘The road was notdesigned to accommodate parking and it’s a safety hazard.”

This year’s record-breaking snow fall caused plans to restrict parking along Catlin Avenue across from New-lin Hall to be postponed. Temporary no parking signs have been ordered and will be posted along CatlinAvenue to restrict parking along the road. Onceweather conditions improve, the curbs will be painted yellow to create a permanent fix.

‘‘If a car is parked illegally and before a ticket isissued, we are going to do our best to track down the owner first, because people are so used to parking there,” said Staff Sgt. Robert Hubauer, chief accidentinvestigator of Security Battalion.

The parking issue was brought the attention of the Safe Drive Working Group and to the Safety Council, because of the width of Catlin Avenue. After inspecting the road, the SDWG determined that restricting parking along the road would be the best solution.

‘‘There are a lot of people who travel along that road,” said Billig. ‘‘We want to make sure people know the parking restrictions are happening, so it’s not a surprise.”
