For all service branches who need to get their taxes done, there is still time to head over to the Joint Base-Myer Henderson Hall tax center or the Headquarters Marine Corps tax center where tax preparation is done for free until May 7 — the close of tax season for all service branches.
‘‘Both tax centers include preparation and electronic filing of federal and state tax returns,” said Capt. Jacquin Gilchrist, legal assistance attorney, Military District of Washington, Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, and supervisor of JBM-HH’s tax center operations.
‘‘If eligible for electronic filing, the filer will receive any refund they may be owed by direct deposit within 7-14 days. Be sure to bring a voided check,” he said.
‘‘Those eligible for assistance at the tax centers include active duty servicemembers and their Family members, widows, widowers, dependents of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, servicemembers, reservists on active duty for more than 30 days and retirees,” Gilchrist said. ‘‘Tax filers should be sure to bring military identification cards, social security cards, all W-2s, 1099s and HUD-1s.”
JBM-HH’s tax center is located in Fort Myer’s Bldg. 406 and is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Appointments are booked until May 7, but walk-in services are available for clients filing 1040EZ and have one W-2 and, or a 1099.
The HQMC tax center at Henderson Hall is located in Bldg. 29, Room 100, where the staff offers tax assistance on a walk-in basis from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. No appointment is needed. The Marines and Soldiers preparing taxes work together at both tax centers.
‘‘We have stayed busy since the grand opening of JBM-HH’s tax center Jan 29.” said Staff Sgt. Carrie Cole, tax center staff member with U.S. Army Garrison. ‘‘Many people are coming in right away to get their taxes done and out of the way, and others have the tendency to wait right up until the deadline to come in,” she said.
‘‘I think working here is a great way to help out the military community,” said Marine Cpl. Robert White, tax center staff member with Headquarters Marine Corps Information Technology Center. ‘‘Servicemembers don’t have a lot of time to go hunting down businesses to do their taxes. What I have to say is come here. We will get it done quickly, and it’s free. You can’t beat that.”
The JBM-HH and the HQMC tax centers can be reached at (703) 696-1040 and (703) 693-7001, respectively.
