In order to preserve the safe and healthy environment of care on the Walter Reed campus, the Walter Reed U. S. Army Garrison is altering some policies regarding vehicle registration and access gates.
Military, civilian and contract staff must register any vehicle they regularly drive on post with the Provost Marshal’s Office. The vehicle registration office is in Delano Hall (Bldg. 11), Rm. G-109. Hours are from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the office is open through lunch. The vehicle registration phone number is (202) 782-8151.
Vehicle registration provides a Department of Defense decal for the vehicle, which is quickly recognized by security officers at the gate and which results in much faster entrance onto post.
To register a vehicle, staff members must have a valid DoD military or civilian identification card; valid state driver’s license; current proof of insurance; and current proof of emissions test for vehicles older than 1993.
The Garrison will operate temporary satellite vehicle registration locations on post to make it easier for staff members to register vehicles. This service will be available in Heaton Pavilion’s Joel Auditorium and Rm. 2H26 next week. In Joel, service will be available Monday from 10 to 11 a.m., and from 4 to 5 p.m.; Tuesday’s hours will be from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m., and from 2 to 3 p.m.; Wednesday from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m., and from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.; and Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. and 2 to 3 p.m.
In Rm. 2H26, registration will be March 19 from 9 to 10 a.m., and from 2 to 4 p.m.
Beginning Monday, the Alaska Avenue gate, near the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, will be a DoD-decal-only gate. Vehicles with no DoD decal attempting to enter that gate will be directed to one of the other gates. The 16th Street gate and the Elder Street gate will continue to allow entry by vehicles with and without decals.
All drivers entering the post will still be required to present a valid, government-issued identification card, such as a CAC card, military ID card, or driver’s license.
The Walter Reed U.S. Army Garrison has recently initiated more thorough screening of vehicles entering the post. This screening is in the best interests of the Walter Reed community, and is consistent with Army and DoD policies regulating access to military installations, according to Garrison officials.
The screening process has inconvenienced commuters by causing delays along Georgia Avenue and 16th Street, which Walter Reed officials attribute to the failure of many Walter Reed staff members to comply with policies.
Employees are urged to register their vehicles through PMO, display the decal on their vehicle, and use the ‘‘express entrance” onto post to help eliminate traffic delays at the gates, officials add.
