CLEP closer to a college degree

The Lifelong Learning Center is a resource for Marines, their families and Department of Defense civilians seeking college degrees.

The LLC is now a national test center, which means students have the option oftaking computer-based College Level Examination Program tests to exempt themselves from certain classes.

Taking a CLEP test, commonly referred to as ‘‘CLEPing out” of a class, is a way to expedite the process of earning a degree.

‘‘All of our tests are administered online,” said Susan McIntosh, the base education services officer.

The immediacy of online testing allowsstudents to see their results as soon as they complete an exam.

‘‘As soon as the student stands up out of their seat, they know whether or not they passed,” said McIntosh.

The education center offers 34 CLEP tests that include subjects in mathematics, humanities, history and science, and are administered by Northern Virginia Community College at the continuing education computer lab.

The Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support provides oversight for all military testing programs. This includes CLEP, Scholastic Assessment Tests and American College Tests.

All active-duty service members can take any CLEP test, and as many subsequent tests as they want, for free. All applicants mustproduce two forms of picture identification to receive funding.

Military dependents and civilians must pay a $20 registration fee, in addition to a $72 test fee. Students can register through the LLC testing office at 703-784-4012 or debbie. oconnor.ctr@usmc.mil. Test sessions are held Thursdays at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
