A Naval Academy midshipman received the Black Engineer of the Year Award at the 2011 BEYA Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Global Competitiveness Conference held in Washington, D.C., Feb. 18.
Midshipman 1st Class Natalie Logan was awarded the BEYA for military leadership for her volunteer work done at the academy.
Logan led a group of midshipmen female mentors in volunteering with the S.M.A.R.T (Skills, Mastery and Resistance Training) Girls program of the Boys and Girls Club of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County.
As president of the Benjamin Banneker Math and Science Honor Society in 2010, Logan organized her fellow midshipmen to help tutor kids from elementary and high school, contributing to more than 30 of the high school students achieving passing grades on their exams. The program was expanded to help more schools in the Anne Arundel County area.
‘‘I feel honored and blessed,” said Logan. ‘‘I would also like to thank all the midshipmen that helped reach out to the community through the volunteer programs I ran during my naval career.”
Each year, BEYA recognizes the many achievements of African-American leaders, military and civilian, across the country in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and leadership.
‘‘I am proud to represent the Naval Academy in this important event,” said Logan. ‘‘I am glad that I can show others that the military is about mentorship and reaching out to make our country a better place rather than just fighting wars.”
Logan, 22, is from Colorado Springs, Colo. and is majoring in chemistry. She will be commissioned as an ensign in the Navy upon graduation from the May 27 and will serve as a Surface Warfare Officer.
‘‘This achievement will help in my naval career through the lessons I learned and the things that I did, including taking care of people, showing them their potential as well as helping them reach their goals,” said Logan.
The conference offers seminars and workshops providing new information on topics affecting technology professionals including career advancement, diversity programs and specialized industry updates.
