Free tax preparation sites to open on Maryland tax day

COLUMBIA, MD - The AARP Foundation, in conjunction with the Internal Revenue Service, the Comptroller of Maryland and other state partners, will launch “Maryland Tax Day“ with a press conference at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way in Columbia, Maryland on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 9 am.

This event kicks off a statewide campaign to raise awareness of the AARP Tax-Aide program, which offers free income tax assistance, including federal and state tax preparation, to low and middle-income Maryland taxpayers at 175 locations throughout the tax year. On “Maryland Tax Day“ 27 sites will open at various locations throughout the state to provide these free services with no appointments necessary.

“Trained volunteers working at these free tax preparation sites will help ensure taxpayers receive all the deductions and credits they are due,“ says Deborah L. Herman, Maryland State Coordinator for the AARP Tax-Aide program. “We can alleviate some of the stress taxpayers face at tax time, and help many get a faster refund.“

“It is the highest priority of the Comptroller's Office to provide quality services to the taxpayers of Maryland,“ said Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot. “I can think of no better way of doing so than by partnering with The AARP Foundation and the IRS to help people navigate through the sometimes complicated process of filing their taxes.“

“I am so pleased that AARP is offering this very valuable service to our people,“ said Liz Bobo, Chairperson of the Howard County Delegation to the Maryland House of Delegates. “To have it available right in our back yard is great.“

The AARP Tax-Aide program is entering its 40th year, and is the nation's largest volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation service. The mission of the program is to provide high quality free income tax assistance and tax form preparation to low and middle-income taxpayers, with special attention to those age 60 and over. AARP Tax-Aide is a program of the AARP Foundation and is offered in conjunction with the IRS.

Over 32,000 volunteers make up AARP Tax-Aide program nationwide, with almost 700 volunteers in Maryland. Last year, the Tax-Aide Program in Maryland helped more than 30,000 taxpayers of all ages prepare their state and federal taxes free of charge.
