Travel required for medical care for active-duty service members (ADSM) is covered in the Department of Navy Financial Management Manual which states travel is chargeable, based on funding availability, to the Navy⁄USMC command or activity to which the ADSM is assigned for administrative purposes.
ADSMs should contact their command comptroller before making travel arrangements, and submit a travel request, to determine what costs may be covered.
For non-active duty Prime enrollees (family members, retirees, etc.), there are two options for funding if care is required outside of 100-mile radius from Pax River. The TRICARE Prime travel entitlement or traveling as a non-medical attendant. Active duty and non-active duty who are enrolled to Naval Health Clinic Pax River, and who elect to obtain routine, non-emergency specialty medical care outside the National Capital Area, may not be eligible for reimbursement if equivalent care was available in the National Capital Area and⁄or if care was obtained without primary care manager referral.
For more information regarding medical travel funding, contact Pax River Naval Health Clinic Health Benefit Advisor Jane Hambel at 301-995-4980.
