‘‘Leading From the Front”

Topp was nominated by MMCS(SW⁄AW) Jason P. Enge, 8th Company Senior Enlisted Leader.

''He’s a machine. He is the first Second Class squad leader since we got the go to have them,'' said Enge. ''His squad loves his leadership style, and can’t praise him enough. I have no doubt he will succeed in whatever he decides to do.''

Topp’s leadership and drive made him a popular figure in his company. His commitment to the community has led him to volunteer, and he actively encourages others to do so as well. Most recently, Topp and his Company participated in the Polar Bear Plunge to raise money for the Special Olympics. Because of his efforts, 8th Company raised more than $6,000.

''The event caught my attention because it breaks away from the typical dinner squad outing and did something that everyone can talk about,'' said Topp. ''Not to mention that it was for a good cause and by simply freezing for a few minutes we can make many others’ lives happier.''

Topp, who hopes on service selecting SEAL, insists that community service is the obligation of every Midshipman.

''I would not say I do any more than the next Midshipman. We all do our part,'' said Topp. ''Community service is like any other service: it is selfless. Serving something beyond oneself is the only way to leave an impact after you are gone.''
