Navy Air and Missile Defense Command

On March 2009 Congressman Rob Wittman and Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Gary Roughead announced the Navy’s intent to stand up the Navy Air and Missile Defense Command (NAMDC) as an organization to ‘‘bring together the thinking, the ideas, the intellectual capital for our ballistic missile defense initiatives and progress.” The command was officially established two months later on 30 April.

NAMDC is a part of the Navy’s initiative to enhance combat capability to assess, inform, and enable the Navy to establish and implement uniform solutions across a broad range of complex air and ballistic missile challenges through Warfare Centers of Excellence. NAMDC is the lead organization for maritime integrated air and missile defense (IAMD). NAMDC will support the Chief of Naval Operations and Fleet component commanders end-to-end by integrating technologies, warfighting concepts and command and control. NAMDC will provide operational support to the Fleet, and will report to Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet.

IAMD, which includes ballistic missile defense, is a Navy key war-fighting capability for the U.S. Maritime Strategy, which calls for credible combat power to be continuously postured to protect America’s vital interests. IAMD provides the ability to use international waters to defend against established and emergent threats, which underlies the importance of free and lawful use of the seas.

NAMDC is currently commanded by Rear Admiral Alan B. “Brad“ Hicks. RADM Hicks is supported by a combination of active duty, reserve, contractor and government service personnel with robust backgrounds in Surface Warfare, Aviation, Intelligence, Engineering, Applied Sciences and vast expertise in the IAMD arena. NAMDC will ultimately have a staff of 75.

Our Mission:
The Navy Air and Missile Defense Command (NAMDC) was established as a center of excellence to provide oversight and end-to-end assessment of Maritime Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD). NAMDC’s mission is to assist commanders and U.S. Fleet Forces (USFF) in articulating fleet warfighting requirements in readiness, training, and capabilities. NAMDC views Maritime IAMD from a Combatant Commander (CCDR) requirements perspective and assesses Naval IAMD capabilities across all platform types.
