Welcome to Joint Base Andrews

The 316th Wing, under the auspices of the Air Force District of Washington, assumed host-unit responsibilities at Andrews Air Force Base, now Joint Base Andrews, in June 2006. The mission of the 316 WG is to provide contingency-response capability critical to national security. This capability includes emergency reaction rotary-wing airlift for the National Capital Region, combat-ready Airmen for Air and Space Expeditionary Forces, and a secure installation and robust infrastructure to support base organizations.

Often called ‘‘The Gateway to the Nation’s Capital,” Andrews has seen not only our U.S. government leaders, but kings, queens, prime ministers and military leaders from more than 50 nations fly on its aircraft and transit the base. People stationed here may see or even participate in events and operations that directly affect the course of world events. Andrews is constantly featured in the public spotlight on national and international television, radio, newspapers and magazines.

Approximately 13,000 people, including Active Duty, Guard and Reserve personnel and their families, civilian employees, and contractors live and⁄or work at Andrews, performing both routine and exceptional duties.

The 316 WG is host to more than 60 separate organizations here, including the 89th Airlift Wing (responsible for providing safe, reliable, worldwide airlift and logistical support for the president of the United States, vice president, Cabinet members and other high-ranking U.S. and foreign government officials), and units from the Army, Navy, Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard.

In addition to recreational facilities found at most other bases, Andrews features unlimited points of interest in surrounding communities, which can make your stay here a pleasant and memorable one.

Families not accustomed to living in a large metropolitan area may go through a period of adjustment, but the benefits of an assignment here cannot be matched.

Again, welcome! Use this guide to become better acquainted with the base and the local area. For information not found in this guide, and for news, photos and videos of Team Andrews visit www.andrews.af.mil.
