If you are looking for a variety of ways to spend your free time, Fort Belvoir is the perfect place. Looking for exercise? Check out one of the two fitness facilities on post or the swimming pools (there are three outdoor and one indoor), or the golf courses (a nine-hole and two 18-hole courses here). You can also pursue your hobbies (there is an automotive shop, bowling center, community center) and outdoor interests (marina, outdoor recreation equipment, wildlife and wetland refuges). ARCHERY CENTER Indoor and outdoor ranges are available for year-round use. The Fort Belvoir archery and hunting programs have been cited as model programs and received attention in both local and national hunting publications. The center is located at Tompkins Basin, Bldg. 778 at the end of Warren Road, (703) 805-3688. AUTOMOTIVE SHOP The key to keeping your vehicle reliable is regular maintenance. The Auto Shop makes it easy and affordable by providing space, supplies and advice. The Auto Shop hours of operation are Wednesday through Thursday, 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, 10 am. to 6 p.m. The shop is closed Monday and Tuesday. The sales store closes one hour before shop closing. All work and clean up has to be completed at least one hour prior to shop closing. The shop is located in the Kawamura Community Center, Bldg. 1462, on Gunston Road, (703) 806-4088. BOWLING CENTER Everyone enjoys a good game of bowling at the totally renovated Bowling Center. Practice with friends or alone, or join a league for exciting weekly competition. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday,9 a.m. to midnight, and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Cosmic Bowling is offered Saturday from 6 p.m. to midnight. The center's restaurant, The Strike Zone, has a full meal and snack menu. The center is in Bldg. 1199, 9630 Middleton Road, (703) 805-2991. Community Center The center hosts bingo, comedy shows, dances and TGIF parties. Located in Bldg. 1200 on Taylor Road, the center is open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Holidays hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The center is home to Bozzelli's Deli, open for lunch and early dinner. The center also features the Club Annex Bar, open Wednesday and Thursday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. There are also rooms for catered events. Officers' Club This beautiful, historic club - situated on the banks of the Potomac River, with excellent views of the river - offers lunch, dinner, special all-you-can-eat meals and Sunday Brunch. With many elegantly decorated rooms, the Officers' Club is perfect for small seminars, luncheons or large dinner parties. The spacious swimming pool complex is the perfect gathering place for families to spend the day together. The cozy Washington Lounge, located in the Fort Belvoir Officers' Club, has the warmth and charm of an English pub. Membership is open to all officers and DoD civilians equivalent to GS-7 or NF-3 and above. The administrative office is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lunch is offered Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Dinner specials include: Tuesday Steak Night, 6 to 9 p.m.; Wednesday Family Night , 6 to 9 p.m.; and Friday Seafood Buffet, 6 to 9 p.m. A Sunday brunch is available 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.. The club is open for special functions only on Saturday. North Post Golf Course INFORMATION, TICKETING AND REGISTRATION<P> ITR is the post's source for travel information to destinations near and far and is a convenient source for tickets to theme parks, local entertainment and sporting events. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Holidays hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ITR is located inside the Community Center, Bldg. 1200 on Taylor Road (703) 805-3714. KAWAMURA COMMUNITY ARTS AND CRAFTS CENTER Stop in at the Kawamura Community Arts and Crafts Center to see how a little creativity can brighten your life. The Wood Shop, (703) 806-4654, is closed Monday, open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., closed Friday, open Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m.. The Self-Help Frame Shop is open Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m. The Auto Shop (see above listing) as well as the General's Store, (703) 806-4659, featuring plaques, trophies and military memorabilia as well as a custom framing shop, (703) 806-4652, are also in the center. MARINA The marina, located on the Potomac River, offers a unique boating experience as well as space for storing, repairing and maintaining privately owned boats. Patrons can also take water safety and boat handling classes. A boat lift and launch ramp allows boat launchings for a small fee. Hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The marina is located at the entrance to River Village on South Post, and the office is in Bldg. 1696, 5465 Hudson Road, (703) 781-8282. OUTDOOR RECREATION EQUIPMENT ISSUE CENTER The Equipment Issue Center provides a majority of seasonal outdoor equipment. The center offers camping gear, party canopies, grills and more for spring and summer. Kayaks and canoes are also available. For the winter months the center turns into a complete ski and snowboard shop. The Equipment Issue Center is located in Bldg. 778, Warren and Johnson Road, (703) 805-3081. SWIMMING POOLS The Fort Belvoir pools offer group instruction and private lessons, and even aqua-aerobics. The pools are also available for special events. The two outdoor pools, located on Gunston Road on South Post and near the PX⁄Commissary shopping center on North Post, are open from Memorial Day through Labor Day each year, from noon until sunset. The Benyaurd Indoor Pool is open year-round, Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Fridays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3:30 to 8:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Benyaurd is just off Gunston Road, between 21st and 23rd streets, in Bldg. 182, (703) 805-2620. YOUTH SERVICES This program is a high-energy whirlwind of activity for youths ages 6 to 18. YS sponsors a variety of programs offering opportunities in life skills, citizenship and leadership, sports and fitness, leisure, recreation and the arts, and mentoring, intervention, and support services. The sports program offers baseball, T-ball, football, soccer, basketball, track and field, and golf. Hours are Monday through Friday, 2:30 to 8 p.m., Friday 2:30 to 11 p.m., and Saturday, noon to 11 p.m., closed Sunday. The YS is in Bldg. 1003, 5850 Langfitt Loop, (703) 805-4515. WILDLIFE REFUGE AREAS The installation's natural resources are managed by the Directorate of Public Works, Environmental and Natural Resource Division, (703) 806-0049, or environmental@belvoir.army.mil. Accotink Bay Wildlife Refuge Environmental Education Center Opened in 2000, the center provides information regarding the refuge complex and the installation's natural resources through displays, videos, brochures, and interpretive programs. Contact the Directorate of Public Works, Environmental and Natural Resources Division at (703) 806-4007, or environmental@belvoir.army.mil. The Accotink Bay Wildlife Refuge. Environmental Education Center is situated at the entrance to the Accotink Bay Wildlife Refuge. The refuge has a 9-mile nature trail system, including a 1⁄2 mile handicap-accessible trail (Pohick Loop Trail), which is open dawn to dusk, seven days a week. Jackson Miles Abbott Wetland Refuge In 1988, Fort Belvoir established a second refuge, the Jackson Miles Abbott Wetland Refuge, to protect another sensitive wetland area and to provide opportunities for wildlife watching. This refuge has a one-mile asphalt trail with an observation deck overlooking the wetland area. It also offers fishing (including handicap-accessible fishing piers) in Mulligan Pond. A Virginia state fishing license is required. The refuge is open to the public from dawn to dusk, seven days a week.
